ADV-9705| Reimagining the Archive
San Francisco’s 1906 earthquake, one of the most powerful of all time, destroyed biologist Louis Aggasiz’s collection of preserved fish and other marine specimens - all meticulously labeled and catalogued. Using Houghton Library’s collection of illustrations from Jacques Burkhardt, Agassiz’s personal illustrator and expedition companion, this project attempts to reassemble Agassiz’s archive through digital collage.
