| Digital Material Systems: Ceramicswith Keunwook Kim & Quincy Kuang
This project presents a novel approach to fabricating organic ceramic forms using a robotic arm for controlled deposition of clay slip. This “drip” forming method challenges the predictability of traditional slip-casting methods by leveraging the fluid mechanics of the liquid clay body. Paired with the precision and flexibility of an industrial robot, the system is capable of extruding a bespoke liquid clay mixture in individual droplets. Resulting artifacts are imbued with a palpable sense of time and gravity.

Initial tests with material composition, molding, and kiln firing. A major component of this work was the development of a unique liquid clay body recipe. Glass silica frit, EPK clay, water, Epsom salt and a Darvan dispersing agent were used to create the extrusion mixture. This material composition resembles a glaze more so than a clay body, and allows water to pass through the clay particles much more quickly than traditional porcelain slip. Once extruded onto a plaster block or mold, the material dries quickly and is conducive to textural layering of individual droplets without sacrificing their organic form.
A 6-axis robotic arm was equipped with a clay extrusion nozzle housing a mechanical augur. Air pressure was modulated as needed throughout the extrusion process to maintain proper material consistency. A variety of toolpaths were generated, including 3D spiralized cylindrical and square forms, as well as linear 2D curves and lattices. Toolpath speeds were adjusted manually as needed to achieve desired results. Many tests were done to find appropriate Z height for dripping.
